Local town walks and treasure hunts, visits to the beach, regional towns and cities, historic sites, and vineyards. Activities like swimming, sauna and petanque (French bowls). Experiencing new skills, such as cidermaking, gardening, canoeing, quilting. Visits to cellars/caves and local producers to see where they’re made and for wine, cider and local produce tasting . Lots of good food, with picnics, and communal feasts – often on a Bring and Share basis. Music and entertainment evenings (you can get involved too!) Ceilidhs/ Twmpath/ Fest Nos music and dancing.
Lots of other things too!
Each community travels to the other in rotation – every 2 years either Llanidloes will visit Derval or Derval will visit Llanidloes. So once every 4 years a visit to Derval is organised. Most but not all of those who travel to Derval host one or more Derval visitors when they come to our area. Don’t worry if you can’t host, it’s still great if you can come on the trip and if you can attend events in Llanidloes to welcome our Derval visitors.
Definitely not. Many people who come on Twinning trips don’t speak much or even any French. As long as you’re keen to get involved that’s all that matters! Many in Derval have good English and you will be matched with a host person or family who as far as possible suit your personal or family profile – in language, age, children etc.
It is FREE to join the twinning association, with a voluntary donation of £25/yr/per family.
Our friends from Derval will be visiting Llanidloes in summer 2026. We are looking for host families.
